Polish B1 writing example: sample letter with marking
A part b task, a B1-level answer with seven typical mistakes, corrections and a sample mark. In short: B1 writing is marked on three criteria worth 10 points each, 30 in total.
Updated 2 November 2026
How does the B1 writing part work?
You write a set of two texts. Part a is a short text of 20–50 words (a note, a notice). Part b is 150–180 words: a letter, an e-mail, a story or a description. Together that is about 200 words, ±10%, so roughly 180–220.
- Time: 75 minutes.
- The Commission gives one mark for the whole set, not one per text.
- To pass Pisanie you need at least 50% — 15 out of 30.

What criteria are used to mark B1 writing?
The Commission’s answer sheets from 2021–2024 list three criteria worth 10 points each. They give no detailed descriptors, so the explanations are our reading of the names.
| Criterion | Max | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Wykonanie zadania (treść, forma, objętość) | 10 | Every task point covered, the right form (greeting, sign-off), the right length. |
| Środki językowe | 10 | Varied, appropriate vocabulary and structures; a consistent style and register. |
| Poprawność językowa | 10 | Grammar, word choice, spelling (including Polish letters), punctuation. |
Sample task (part b)
Zadanie. Zapisałeś/zapisałaś się na kurs pływania na miejskim basenie, ale zajęcia często się nie odbywają. Napisz e-mail z reklamacją do kierownika basenu. W e-mailu napisz: kiedy i na jaki kurs się zapisałeś/zapisałaś; jakie są problemy; dlaczego ten kurs jest dla ciebie ważny; czego oczekujesz. (150–180 słów)
Sample B1 answer
We wrote both the task and the answer. This is how a real candidate might write: about 160 words, mistakes in bold.
Potrzebuję ten kurs, bo mam problemy z kręgosłupem i lekarz zalecił mi pływanie. Poza tym w lipcu jadę z dziećmi nad morze i chcę dobrze pływać, żeby czuć się bezpiecznie w wodzie.
Czy możesz zwrócić mi pieniądze za odwołane zajęcia albo zaproponować dodatkowe terminy? Proszę też, żeby w przyszłości basen informował nas SMS-em o zmianach w planie zajęć. Mam nadzieję, że szybko rozwiąże Pan ten problem. Czekam na odpowiedź. Z poważaniem, Hanna Melnyk
What are the mistakes in this letter?
| Mistake | Correct | Why |
|---|---|---|
| dla dorosłe | dla dorosłych | Dla takes the genitive (dopełniacz). |
| zaplacilam | zapłaciłam | Both ł letters are missing. Leaving out Polish letters, as in text messages, is a spelling mistake. |
| pięć zajęcia | pięć zajęć | Numbers from 5 up take the genitive plural. |
| zajęcia było odwołane | zajęcia były odwołane | Zajęcia is plural-only, so the verb is plural too. |
| w końcu wracałam | w końcu wróciłam | One specific completed action needs the perfective. Wracałam describes a process or something that kept happening. |
| Potrzebuję ten kurs | Potrzebuję tego kursu | Potrzebować takes the genitive: czego? — tego kursu. |
| Czy możesz zwrócić | Czy mógłby Pan zwrócić | A formal letter uses Pan/Pani, not the informal “you”. Don’t mix registers. |
How would we mark this text?
This is an illustrative mark based on our reading of the criteria, not the Commission’s: an examiner may assess it differently. The Commission also marks the whole set; here we look at part b only.
| Criterion | Points | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Wykonanie zadania | 10/10 | All four points covered, formal e-mail form, right length. Mistakes don’t affect this criterion. |
| Środki językowe | 7/10 | Good topic words (odwołane, uczestnicy, dodatkowe terminy) and linkers (niestety, poza tym), but mostly simple sentences, and the request slips into the informal “you”. |
| Poprawność językowa | 6/10 | Seven mistakes in 160 words. They don’t block understanding, but there are many. |
| Total | 23/30 | About 77% — above the 50% pass mark if part a is at the same level. |
