Polish verb aspect: perfective vs imperfective, pairs and tables
Almost every Polish verb comes in a pair: czytać — przeczytać, kupować — kupić. Choosing the right one is one of the most common grammar points on the B1 exam. Below are the rules, tables of pairs and tenses, signal words and exercises.

What is verb aspect?
Niedokonany (imperfective) presents an action as a process or as something repeated: czytać — to read, to be reading. Dokonany (perfective) presents it as a single completed action with a result: przeczytać — to read through, to finish reading.
- Wczoraj czytałam książkę przez dwie godziny. — I was reading a book for two hours yesterday: the process, not the result.
- Wczoraj przeczytałam całą książkę. — I read the whole book yesterday: the result, the book is finished.
Some very common verbs have no pair and are imperfective only: być, mieć, wiedzieć, musieć, lubić.
How aspect pairs are formed
There are three patterns. Most often the perfective is formed with a prefix. Second, the imperfective is formed from the perfective with the suffix -ywa-, -iwa- or -a-. Third, some pairs simply have to be memorised: a different stem or an unexpected form.
| Pattern | Niedokonany | Dokonany | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prefix | robić | zrobić | to do, make |
| Prefix | pisać | napisać | to write |
| Prefix | czytać | przeczytać | to read |
| Prefix | jeść | zjeść | to eat |
| Prefix | pić | wypić | to drink |
| Prefix | płacić | zapłacić | to pay |
| Prefix | dzwonić | zadzwonić | to call, phone |
| Prefix | gotować | ugotować | to cook |
| -ywa- / -iwa- | pokazywać | pokazać | to show |
| -ywa- / -iwa- | zapisywać | zapisać | to write down |
| -ywa- / -iwa- | zakochiwać się | zakochać się | to fall in love |
| -a- | wracać | wrócić | to come back |
| -a- | zapraszać | zaprosić | to invite |
| -a- | odpowiadać | odpowiedzieć | to answer |
| -a- | otwierać | otworzyć | to open |
| -a- | zamykać | zamknąć | to close |
| Memorise | brać | wziąć | to take |
| Memorise | mówić | powiedzieć | to say, tell |
| Memorise | oglądać | obejrzeć | to watch |
| Memorise | kupować | kupić | to buy |
| Memorise | widzieć | zobaczyć | to see |
| Memorise | kłaść | położyć | to put, lay |
| Memorise | dawać | dać | to give |
A prefix does not always just make a pair — it often changes the meaning. pisać → napisać simply means “to write (and finish)”, but przepisać means “to copy, rewrite” and podpisać “to sign”. Such verbs have their own imperfective partner: przepisywać, podpisywać.
Table: which tenses each aspect has
The key rule: only imperfective verbs have a present tense. A perfective form that looks like the present actually refers to the future: przeczytam means “I will read (it)”, not “I am reading”.
| Tense | Niedokonany (czytać) | Dokonany (przeczytać) |
|---|---|---|
| Present | czytam — I read / I am reading | — (none) |
| Past | czytałem / czytałam — I was reading, I used to read | przeczytałem / przeczytałam — I read (it), I finished reading |
| Future | będę czytać / będę czytał(a) — I will be reading | przeczytam — I will read (it) |
| Imperative | czytaj — read | przeczytaj — read (it through) |
| Conditional | czytałbym / czytałabym — I would read | przeczytałbym / przeczytałabym — I would read (it through) |
- The imperfective future is compound: będę + infinitive, or będę + the past-tense form (będę czytał, będę czytała). Both are correct.
- The perfective future is simple, one word: napiszę, zrobię, kupię.
- A common mistake: będę napisać. Będę never combines with a perfective verb — say napiszę or będę pisać.
Process or result, habit or one-off
| Niedokonany | Dokonany |
|---|---|
| Process, duration: Kiedy gotowałam obiad, … | A single completed event: … zadzwonił telefon. |
| Repetition, habit: Codziennie piję kawę. | Once: Wypiłem kawę i wyszedłem. |
| Usually, always: Zawsze płacę kartą. | One specific occasion: Dziś zapłaciłem gotówką. |
| Experience, “ever”: Nigdy nie jadłem sushi. | Result by now: Już zjadłem obiad. |
| A process in the future: Jutro będę pisać raport cały dzień. | A result in the future: Jutro napiszę raport i wyślę go szefowi. |
A sequence of actions, one after another, takes the perfective: Wstałem, umyłem się i wyszedłem do pracy. The background against which something happened takes the imperfective: Kiedy czytałam, nagle zgasło światło.
Signal words
| Usually with niedokonany | Usually with dokonany |
|---|---|
| codziennie, często, zwykle, zawsze, czasem | nagle, od razu, w końcu, wreszcie |
| przez godzinę, długo, cały dzień | w godzinę, do piątku, za tydzień |
| nigdy (experience): Nigdy nie byłem w Gdańsku | już (result): Już skończyłem |
These are hints, not rules. Już can go with the imperfective too: Już jem — “I’m eating already”. What decides is the meaning: process or result.
The imperative and prohibitions
- Asking someone to do something once — usually perfective: Zamknij okno, proszę. Zadzwoń do mnie jutro.
- Invitations, habits or “go ahead” — imperfective: Częstuj się! Dzwoń, kiedy chcesz.
- Prohibitions take the imperfective: Nie zamykaj okna! Nie otwieraj drzwi! A mistake: “Nie zamknij okna”.
- The exception is a warning against doing something by accident: Nie zapomnij paszportu! Here the perfective is correct.
Practise the forms: the imperative, requests, advice and invitations, everyday invitations and requests.
After zaczynać, kończyć, przestać and modal verbs
- After zaczynać / zacząć, kończyć / skończyć, przestawać / przestać — imperfective only: Zacząłem uczyć się polskiego rok temu. Skończyłam gotować. Przestań mówić tak głośno! A mistake: “zacząłem nauczyć się”.
- After lubić and umieć — usually imperfective: Lubię gotować. Umiem pływać.
- After musieć, chcieć, móc, trzeba — either aspect, depending on meaning: Muszę napisać raport do piątku (one result) vs Muszę codziennie pisać raporty (repetition).
- The prohibition nie wolno takes the imperfective: Tu nie wolno palić. But nie móc with a perfective means “I can’t manage to”: Nie mogę otworzyć tego pliku.
How Polish aspect compares with Russian and Ukrainian
If you speak Russian or Ukrainian, the logic is almost the same: process vs result, no present tense for perfectives. If you speak English, think of the contrast between “I was reading” and “I read it” — similar, but in Polish it is built into the verb itself. Differences worth knowing:
- The future: besides będę czytać Polish also has będę czytał / czytała, with the past-tense form. Both are correct. There is no one-word imperfective future like Ukrainian «читатиму».
- Different prefixes in pairs: gotować — ugotować, myć — umyć, widzieć — zobaczyć, oglądać — obejrzeć. The Russian and Ukrainian partners use other prefixes, so learn each Polish pair as a whole.
- A perfective is never the present tense: “I’m reading the paper now” is Teraz czytam gazetę, not “przeczytam”.
Verb aspect in the B1 exam
In Poprawność gramatyczna (45 minutes, 50 % pass mark) aspect is tested in tasks where you choose the correct form, put a verb from brackets into the right form or rephrase a sentence. If the brackets give an infinitive, first decide which aspect the meaning needs, then choose tense and person. Aspect errors also cost points in writing and speaking: “będę napisać” in a letter is a mistake the examiner will spot at once.
